Comments and discussions

Comments keep the conversation with the item you’re talking about. Use them to ask questions, share feedback, make decisions, and keep everyone in the loop.

You can comment on messages, to-dos, cards, files, and other items in Basecamp, and choose which discussions you want to follow.

Jump to:

Posting a comment

Scroll to the bottom of the item to add your comment. You can @mention someone, attach files, and format your text just like you can elsewhere in Basecamp.

When you’re ready, click the Add this comment button. Your comment stays with the item so the whole conversation is easy to follow.

Replying to a comment

Use Reply when you want to respond to a specific comment. Hover over a comment and click the Reply button that appears at the bottom right, next to the Boost icon. Add your response and post it like any other comment. The original comment will be quoted above your reply so everyone can see what you’re responding to.

You can also highlight part of a comment before clicking Reply to quote just that section.

Following a discussion

At the bottom of any message, to-do, or discussion thread, you'll see a 🔔 Notify me button. Click it to subscribe, and Basecamp will notify you whenever someone comments on that thread.

Replies to individual comments are part of the same discussion, so subscribers will receive a notification when they're posted. The person being replied to will always receive a notification, even if they’ve stopped following the discussion.

Stopping notifications

Click the 🔕 Don’t notify me button at the bottom of the thread to stop receiving notifications for new comments. You'll still be notified if someone @mentions you, assigns the item to you, or replies directly to one of your comments.

You can also unsubscribe from a Basecamp notification email. Click the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email to stop receiving notifications for that specific discussion.

🗒️ Note: Chat and Automatic Check-ins handle notifications differently. Check those pages for how notifications work in each tool.

Closing comments

If a thread doesn't need any further replies, you can close comments on it. Click the ••• menu on the post and choose "Close comments." Anyone who tries to reply by email after comments are closed will get a notification letting them know.

Closing comments also turns off Boosts on that thread. Existing comments and Boosts aren't affected.

Only the post author, admins, and account owners can close comments.
