Understanding storage warnings
Basecamp notifies owners and admins at two thresholds:
At 90% capacity: Owners and admins receive an email notification and see an orange banner on the Home screen.
At 100% capacity: Owners and admins receive an email notification. All account members, including clients, see a red banner on the Home screen and in Adminland.
⚠️ Warning: If your account remains over the storage limit for 30 days, Basecamp will automatically add 1 TB of storage at $50/month so your account can continue without interruption. To avoid the auto-charge, either free up space or add storage before the 30-day mark.
Check what's using space
The Manage storage page shows a list of the largest files across all projects on the account. When you upload a new version of a file, only the latest version's size is counted.
A few things that count toward storage but won't appear in this list:
- Uploads in Pings and Chats are included in the storage calculation but aren't visible in the largest files report.
- Files uploaded in Drafts that were never posted also count toward storage. To remove them, go to your Drafts page and delete any draft uploads you no longer need.
If your usage seems higher than expected, these are the first places to check.
Freeing space
Click any file in the largest files list to go to that file in its project. If you no longer need it, move it to the trash.
A few things to keep in mind:
- If the file is in a project you're not on, you'll be prompted to join it before you can access the file.
- Archived projects still count toward storage. Trashing an archived project will free up that space.
Adding more storage
Go to Adminland > Manage storage > Add more storage, or click Add more storage on the storage warning banner. Review the cost breakdown and payment schedule, then click Buy storage.
🗒️ NOTE: Additional storage doesn't affect any other features of your current package. It acts as a standalone upgrade. you can change your account package at any time and the extra storage will remain in place.
Removing added storage
Go to Adminland > Manage storage > Manage additional storage > Remove storage.
