Pings - private conversations

Pings are direct conversations with other people in your Basecamp account — one-on-one or with a group. They're not attached to any project, so they're the right place for quick questions, side conversations, or anything that doesn't belong in a specific project.

You can send and read Pings from anywhere in Basecamp. Click "Pings + Unreads" at the bottom right of any screen to open the notifications sidebar, where your Pings are always waiting at the top.

Note: Admins and account owners can Ping anyone on the account. Non-admins, including outside collaborators and clients, can only Ping people they share a project with, plus admins and account owners.

Starting a Ping

In the sidebar, click the + icon to start a new Ping. Type a name to find someone on your account — you can add multiple people to start a group conversation. Hit "Ping 'em" and the conversation begins.

Replying to a specific message

To reply to a specific message in a Ping, click the ••• button next to it and hit the arrow icon. Your reply will be sent with the original message quoted.

Viewing files in a Ping conversation

To see all the files shared in a Ping conversation, click the ••• menu in the upper right corner of the conversation and select "See all files posted here."

Archiving a Ping conversation

To archive a Ping conversation, click the ••• menu in the upper right corner and select "Archive this Ping." Archiving removes the conversation for everyone involved — it can't be restored, so read the consequences on the confirmation screen before committing. If you need to continue the conversation later, start a new Ping with the same people.

Editing and deleting messages

To edit or delete a message you've sent, click the ••• button next to the timestamp on your message, then click the pencil icon to edit or the trash icon to delete. When you delete a message, it's gone for everyone in the conversation.

Customizing Pings

Group Pings can be given a name and a cover image — useful if you have several ongoing group conversations and want to tell them apart at a glance.

To name a Ping or add a cover image, click the current Ping name at the top left of the conversation. From there you can type a new name or click the image icon to upload a cover photo. To remove a cover image, click the trash icon in the same spot.
